💡Today’s Tip: Swap out your artificial sweeteners

Here’s why: If you ever feel that being able to consume something that tastes like sugar without all the negative benefits seems too good to be true, that’s because it is. Artificial sweeteners have been linked to glucose intolerance, increased food consumption (not healthy foods), hyperactivity, insomnia, slowed metabolism, and da-da-da-daaah increased body fat and weight gain. They destroy good bacteria in your gut, which can lead to a whole host of other problems like increased cravings, mood changes and development of chronic disease. A paper published in 2017, in PLOS Medicine, even came to the conclusion that “they should not be promoted as part of a healthy diet”. Hopefully this is all enough to convince you!

Here’s How: Stop and choose a better option! If only it were that easy right? The most common artificial sweeteners are saccharin (Sweet n’ Low), acesulfame (Sunnett, Sweet One), aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, etc.), Sucralose (Splenda) and neotame (used by food manyfacturers). If you recognize your go-to packet in the list, then here is your wake up call. It is time to find a better alternative. Here’s what I would suggest using instead: stevia, honey, 100% pure maple syrup, backdrop molasses, date sugar, coconut sugar or just plain old raw sugar.

Remember, even natural sweeteners are sugar. So just be mindful of how much you are using on a daily basis.

Give it the 24 hour challenge and see how easy today’s tip is to implement in your daily routine. If you successfully swap out your artificial sweetener for one of the above options over the next 24 hours, then try to do it successfully for a full week. Then just keep it up.
